The Princess Rara Jonggrang
Once upon a time, there was a powerful prince named Bandung Bandawasa. Bandung Bandawasa won at war by assasinating his enemy, Prabu Baka. But, Bandung Bandawasa fell in love with Prabu Baka’s daughter named Princess Rara Jonggrang.
Bandawasa wanted to marry Rara Jonggrang. However, the princess hated Bandung Bandawasa because the prince had killed her father.
Princess Rara Jonggrang was thinking of a way to refuse Bandawasa’s marriage proposal. Finally, she wanted to marry Bandung Bandawasa if he could build a thousand temples before dawn.
Being helped by genies, Bandawasa built temples very fast. On the other side, Princess Rara Jonggrang wanted to fail him.
She asked all women in her village to stay awake and gathered in the eastern area of the kingdom. The princess and her helpers acted to work very early, lighted a bonfire, and pounded the rice for cooking.
The rooster heard the sound and thought the morning was coming. Because of that, all genies left their works even though there were only 999 temples built.
Finally, Bandawasa knew that Roro Jonggrang tricked him. He got very angry so he cursed Rara Jonggrang into a rock statue called “Arca”. Bandung Bandawasa regretted his decision afterward. So, he built the last temple using the princess's statue to complete Princess Rara Jonggrang's wish.
